Cohabitation Issues
Statistics and research show that 25% of cohabitants who live together have no plans to marry and are labouring under the misapprehension that they have the same rights as married couples.
In the last 15-20 years the number of couples who cohabit have more than doubled to nearly 6 million.
Despite this it is apparent that over 30% of such couples didnt realise that they were differentiated against in the fields of property law, inheritance etc.
Additionally more than half didnt realise that they had the same contact and residence rights and obligations as if they were married.
For these reasons it is important if you are a cohabitant to always take independent legal advice prior to deciding how best to plan your finances, to make a Will or to consider contact/access rights.
