Cohabitation Issues
Statistics and research show that 25% of cohabitants who live together have no plans to marry and are labouring under the misapprehension that they have the same rights as married couples.
In the last 15-20 years the number of couples who cohabit have more than doubled to nearly 6 million.
Despite this it is apparent that over 30% of such couples didn�t realise that they were differentiated against in the fields of property law, inheritance etc.
Additionally more than half didn�t realise that they had the same contact and residence rights and obligations as if they were married.
For these reasons it is important if you are a cohabitant to always take independent legal advice prior to deciding how best to plan your finances, to make a Will or to consider contact/access rights.
